Data loss is no joke. While best practices can prevent the loss of data, many individuals fail to backup their data.

Consider these individuals. If computers had been around in their day, could you imagine the predicaments that they would have been in?

• George Washington to Martha: I cannot tell a lie. I forgot to backup your PC.

• Naamah to Noah: Did you remember to pack the backups before we left the stable?

• What if Moses had written the bible on a laptop and the Red Sea had not parted?

• Would the Egyptian pharohas have demanded their servants to backup??

• Would Carter have discovered a jewel encrusted thumb drive in Tut’s tomb in the Valley of Kings?

• Would Pompeians have escaped to the open seas with their laptops in designer bags when Vesuvius blew?

• Would Saint Mark have remembered to throw his backup into his gondola when the Adriatic Sea entered the Venetian Lagoon?

• Would a distraught Gaius Julius Caesar exclaimed, “I came. I saw. I conquered, but I forgot to back up.”?

• And how about Albert Einstein? If he was alive today would he have commented, “Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. But if it counts and you have it on your computer, you’d better back it up.”?

As British statesman Sir Winston Churchill once proclaimed, “Victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival.”

And might he have added if governing in today’s e-world, “There is no survival if you don’t backup up your plans on your PC and you find yourself without data!!

As British Member of Parliament Lynne Jones reported in a 2007 press release", “Government figures suggest nearly one in five businesses suffers a major disruption every year. Further research suggests 80% of businesses affected by a major incident close down within 18 months, and 90% of those who lose their data are forced to close down within two years.”
