Identity theft doesn’t just happen when somebody sorts through your garbage or steals your wallet. Thieves can steal your digital identity as well.

Like many of us in the technology field (or even the home user) we’ve accumulated several PC’s which are no longer used. Wait! Before you decide to trash that old PC do you still have personal data on it? With identity theft on the rise do you want to risk your data in someone else’s hands?

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) the number one complaint for 2006 was identity theft. It can be as simple as leaving an old receipt on your computer from a previous online purchase, an old email with your username, or even an old resume. That’s all a resourceful thief needs to access your online account.

If you have suspicions that someone has stolen your identity run a credit check on yourself. Kim Komando has written a great article on how to go about doing this. Check out her very informative site.

Digital identity data theft is on the rise. Both companies and home users need to take steps to protect their user accounts. Before you throw out that old PC, download CBL Data Shredder. Run the secure wipe and have peace of mind knowing your data remains yours.

Interesting post. I’m more concerned about spyware rather than the old hard drive I just threw out. The information about running a self credit check is quite useful. Thanks for the info. Jeff
